BS 5839-6 – Fire detectors in loft spaces

Posted on by Gavin

Fire detectors are there to provide us time to escape a building in the event of a fire.

Fires can build rapidly in a loft space due to the environment. Ionisation Smoke detectors/alarms are ideal for this location as it tends to be dusty and this reduces the chance of false alarms. Alarms must always be fitted as instructed by the manufacturer, in a position that can be maintained regularly. You may be required to fit more than 1 detector in the loft space as no point of the room should be more than 7.5m from the detector.

Obviously all building differ immensely. When installing fire alarm systems, you should always take into account the nature of the fire hazard, the type of fire that may develop, the response time of the detector to fire and the need to minimise false alarms.

As with all trades, it is best to consult a professional. Fire detectors/alarms save lives.
